Hypnotherapy Derby now recommended by the Dept of Health

Great news,

As from 1st December 2010, Hypnotherapy Derby will be on the CNHC register. This is the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council, which is government funded, and is the only Regulatory body recognised for the Hypnotherapy profession by the Department of Health, who have recently asked GPs and Chief Nursing Officers to recommend to patients who are seeking complementary therapies to consult with practitioners who are registered with the CNHC.

As Ripley Hypnotherapy have already completed all the necessary pre-requisites for registration, we will be fast tracked onto the register. This means that you will only see a therapist who is properly trained, insured, and adheres to a strict code of ethics and management. This also means you can be assured that we are also a member of the leading professional associations (the NCH).
This is all voluntary, and the main aim is to provide the public with the same kind of service you can expect from a GP or a dentist. That is also to say that should you have any complaint, you will now have a recognised body with which to complain to. Any decent therapist should always consider the publics interests, above their own.

This is a great step forward for our profession, as it will help weed out all the other so called 'therapists' who are not adequately trained, who refuse to join professional organisations, who offer a poor standard of care, and who consistently and put their own interests before that of the public.

If you have any quesitons, please do not hesitate to contact me through the website mentioned above.

Best wishes

X Factor Gossip!! Katie turns to Hypnosis for help!

Find out more about Hypnosis for Anxiety and all things hypnosis.

X Factors Katie Waissel has turned to hypnotherapy to help here overcome her stage fright. Insiders say she needs help or fears she will not be able to perform on Saturday nights live show, where she seems to be constantly battling to keep her place in the hit show.

All the controversy surrounding Katie is quite naturally making her a bag of nerves, but as long as she uses a good hypnotherapist then she will find that inner confidence that she knows she has to sing well and impress the judges and the public. There has been a media circus surrounding Katie all the way through this competition and she needs to put it to one side and just focus her attention on here singing. Hypnotherapy can be great for helping people to ignore the distractions and concentrate on doing what does come naturally, but is tempered by  public scrutiny every day of late.

This series of X Factor is just as controversial as any other, and it is the contestants who suffer because of it. We all experience anxiety/stress at some time in our lives, but some of us know how to deal with it better than others.

If you are wondering if hypnosis can help you with anxiety/stage fright you can contact me at Hypnotherapy Derby where I will be happy to help.

Stop Smoking Derby Hypnotherapist

To Stop Smoking is probably the number 1 resolution seen by a hypno-therapist. Smokers know that smoking is edging towards a point where the government will squeeze every penny out of them AND treat them like lepers at the same time. If you are a smoker you don’t need people to tell you how bad for your health it is- you know all this, the pictures no cigarettes packs give a clear indication of some of the traumas you might face if you continue to smoke. The tv ads as well, show in full horror the damage that all those foreign chemicals can do to you- so what if you knew how to stop, you would!!

No one wants to suffer endless pain through cancer or heart problems or anything else related to smoking for that matter, you just put it to the back of your mind though, because you know that some part of you, wants and needs that cigarette. Until it happens to you or your very nearest and dearest you don’t really think about these things, its put on the back burner. I have helped clients who have had close family members suffer with smoking related illnesses but still find the draw of the nicotine- or whatever else is involved too much to resist.

It all comes down to this- if you were addicted to cigarettes- I mean really addicted like a crack or heroin addict would you really be able to sleep properly at night? Do you get 6-8 hours sleep or more per night? of course - you smoke but you still manage to sleep, crack addicts don’t get that relief without using other drugs to help them sleep. So its fair to say that nicotine may have its appeal- as far as some part of you is concerned, but addiction is a strong word. A compelling urge is a more likely truth, what the inner mind wants- it usually gets. We all have an inner mind whether we like to think so or not- we need our brain to work on things in the background so another part of us can concentrate on doing something else at the same time. This isnt some new age mumbo jumbo- our subconscious minds help us learn speech for example when we are babies, our subconscious mind takes care of controlling our inner emotions- how often have you got angry but didn’t really want to get that mad.

It is true to say that nicotine as a chemical, can effect certain things in the brains functioning- this can be proven scientifically- BUT and this is the crux of the matter, what controls all these chemicals and related effects- our minds. And where is our mind? science cant tell you that because it is not a tangible object, it cant be removed at autopsy, its not really there in a sense. Our minds control all of our lives even if we cant see it we know ‘its’ there.

The thing about hypnosis is along these lines, its hard to explain, but it too has phenomenal power although it cant be seen, recent studies on the brain do show certain areas of the brain are utilised when in hypnosis. Hypnosis can stop you smoking permanently. I have found that jut 1 session which has been honed to perfection over many years can stop my clients smoking for good.

Just 1 session lasting around 1.5 hours can defeat the need or the drive for cigarettes,
if you have been a smoker for many years. It should follow that, if it is an innate drive that you cant help which makes you smoke, even though you know inside you hate it then it is the subconscious mind which needs to be persuaded to relinquish its hold on you. Hypnosis to stop smoking is a tried and tested method of smoking cessation. Hypnosis is not dangerous, you are not asleep in fact you are fully aware so the notion of mind control is a myth. Unlike drugs, there are no side effects and it is a lasting effective solution to help you stop smoking for good NATURALLY.

Hypnotherapy Derby

Hypnosis for Anxiety, advice and information.

Hypnotherapy Derby...caring since 2001

If you have ever experienced sudden panic, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, a feeling of spinning, and a pounding heart - particularly when you have been worried or stressed a lot,  you may have had an anxiety or more commonly called panic attack. Sufferers often feel like they have lost control of themselves, in fact most sufferers think that they have had a heart attack. These attacks can last up to 30 minutes, and can be terrifying, the cause of the attacks is not necessarily obvious and this can lead to more confusion.

The human body and mind is a remarkable thing, probably the most adaptable and intelligent creatures on the planet. But when you look into the panic attacks in a logical and scientific manner then things are not how they seem. Many many years ago when we were literally hunter/gatherers we often had to kill our food ‘face to face’. Neanderthal man would probably have worked as a team to hunt and kill large and more often than not dangerous animals and of course, the hunter could have easily become the hunted. In short we were made to fight things that represented danger, or run away form the danger- evolution had given us these 2 options as the best way to live our lives.

But life today is not all about hunting to kill for dinner, life today is more about stress at being late for work because were stuck in a traffic jam, or anxiety because the computer is working too slow and you cant get that urgent piece of work done. Our society has evolved so much in the last one or two hundred years that the way we live has changed so dramatically our bodies- evolutionary wise, just havent kept up. So what does this mean for us as creatures still designed (at least in part) to hunt and kill on a daily basis. Well, all we can do when faced with the modern day stresses as opposed to what worried our ancestors is use our minds to learn more about ourselves. This power was not available to those many years ago, they thought god or the devil was all powerful and life was just something that happened to us, of which we could not change.

When we encounter a stressful situation today –the remarkable thing is that we respond just as we would have done perhaps thousands of years ago. Our minds can contemplate the vastness of space and the trillions of stars, galaxies and light years involved – but some part of us doesn’t know the difference between us being attacked by a sabre toothed tiger or having to get that report done by next Friday or lose your job. Adrenaline, cortisol and other hormones are released into the body in either situation- in the case of the tiger attacking evading would be the best option, so our muscles would use the released chemicals and increased heart rate to power the muscles to safety. In the case of the report needing finishing the cortisol is not used up by exercise, so it stays in the blood stream for longer – in repeated cases this can eventually lead to fatigue, burn out or exhaustion can occur. The mental implications can be increased anxiety, sometimes depression or compounding of other problems.

We simply are not designed to experience pressures like we do today. We need to catch up with our evolution, but until we do it is only the power of the mind, used correctly that can help us control these situations. As a clinical hypnotherapist I have helped many people to learn to distinguish between what really happens in our bodies and what we perceive as happening. We need to learn exercises that can help keep us calm, if possible we need to manage our time more effectively and wherever possible remove ourselves from any unnecessary situations. I have also found that there can be a sense of being unfulfilled in life. The subconscious mind can help you to see just what you need to lead a happier life, and only hypnosis can access this part of you which though it can have its faults, can be the best friend you never knew you had.

As a caring therapist I have helped many people to beat their anxiety problems, sometimes using insight on its own or more often helping people find better ways to live their lives so stress does not seem so important. I am proud of the things I have helped people to achieve, and I enjoy my job because it is unique in that respect. For further help and advice visit hypnosis for anxiety.

Hypnosis Derby science trying to predict best diet!!

Dieting and weight loss is proably one of the worlds biggest industries - if not the biggest. Scientists are now trying to use DNA to see wich diets would work best for us. Nutrigenomics as its called is one of the newest additions to the diet industry and researchers at Stanford University have found that by matching a diet to a genotype leads to much greater weight loss. Britsih researchers though, point out that this is only a very small sample and more tests need to be done to fully understand the results.

In years to come there could be a DNA test to help with everything, but as I find with many of my clients, weight loss is often just as much about emotional issues and when this is the case then hypnosis can be used to help work through these emotional issues so that you can get to the size clothes you want to fit in. Hypnosis weight loss is a tried and tested method of helping people to lose weight and keep it off. As Hypnotherapy in Derby most dynamic practice -Ripley Hypnotherapy and NLP can help you lose weight until science looks more into the DNA effect on weight. The full article is below. Hypnosis Derby - Scientists study health benefits of illegal drugs

A report published in the Guardian newspaper says that there is growing evidence that drugs such as cocaine, LSD and ecstacy are being used ny people, not only for recreational use but also for help relieving symptoms of anxiety and other mental health disorders.

LSD is thought to have no medical use and as such it was banned in 1971, but even people with terminal illnesses can find some relief form the usual day to day pain that awaits them. A Harvard psychiatrist  - Dr John Halpern is among those who are researching whether the active component in magic mushrooms can have uses in beating chronic pain. Other trials are also being carried out in Switzerland and Washington DC to name a few. These scientists say that just because these drugs are illegal doesnt mean they may have therapeutic benefits in some way.

Hypnotherapy Derby - Help With Phobias

Help With Your Phobia

Hypnotherapy Derby

What is A Phobia?
If you are more than scared, you have to avoid certain things or certain things fill you with dread then it is fair to say you may have a phobic response. This is typically classified as a reaction to a given stimulus which is outside normal parameters of behaviour- that is to say the reaction may be out of all proportion to the stimulus and with no real basis. To be properly diagnosed as a phobia the fear must be consistent (every time you think of or see ‘X’) and  intense ( ‘X’  must actually cause you to have a certain degree of fear). When these symptoms are present and they can interfere with daily life then a diagnosis according to DSM IV can be made. A phobia is actually part of an anxiety disorder and they are one of the most common forms of anxiety seen by a therapist.

It is important to know that a proper diagnosis must be made, as ‘phobia’ is a term which is used a lot by people when that is not their problem. I have had clients who thought they had a phobia but they have had PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Some people may not agree with this, but PTSD does not mean you actually have had to experience the trauma first hand, just seeing the terrorist attacks (ie 9/11) on TV can leave a lasting blueprint on peoples minds, to the point that it can make them terrified of flying. This is not a phobia.

How Do We Come To Have Them?
In my experience phobias can be ‘passed on’ by our peers, if we see someone we look up to being scared of sheep, then we too may grow up with this fear. They can be learned at ANY age, in fact a phobic response just goes to show how instantaneously we can learn. The actual moment of fear can last literally half a second but the effects can, if not treated, last a lifetime. We learn pretty much everything in our lives by association, if we are given sour milk as a small child then it makes sense that we might not go drink milk anymore. Of course this is an evolutionary tale, nature has provided us with this gift to learn quickly what is good and bad. However, our bodies and minds are not as superior as we think because this can cause us problems, how can anyone have a fear of paper? Yet they do and it is called papyrophobia. You can understand a fear of snakes or spiders but the enormous amount of other less well known phobias just goes to show we do not always learn in a useful way.

The amygdala is known as the fear centre of the brain and it is thought this plays a key role in the development of phobic responses. The amygdala is the part of us responsible for setting off our flight or fight response. This creates the feelings of panic and other symptoms when the chemicals released into our bloodstream are not used up (for fight or flight). This mechanism can cause what is felt as anxiety or panic attacks. Typically these are - feeling like a heart attack is imminent, loss of control over oneself, dizziness and so on. These symptoms all have an effect where one can make the other seem worse until the victim is locked into a vicious cycle where panic is caused, the symptoms make the panic worsen, more panic is caused etc.

How Can You Be Free From This Condition
Well to be blunt, if you can create it then it follows that you can destroy it! If it were that simple then hypnotherapists around the world would never see a client with a phobia. It is not that my clients are unresourceful, no it is more a case of them being in an unresourceful state. Hypnosis on the other hand or being in a hypnotic state, is a state where just like being in a dream anything can happen. Have you ever dreamed you were flying or that you were somewhere where it all felt actually real. In the trance state anything can become possible. It is the opening up of all your resources which you may never have known you had. As humans we are all born the same, our brains work pretty much the same for most of us. So why are some people able to deal with things better than other? Because they choose to do so, or they are more able to use the resources inside of them to get what they want. Not everybody is able to get to use their resources so effectively, but with the help of hypnosis then you too can achieve so much more than you thought was possible.

For More Help
I have helped countless people conquer their phobias, I can help you conquer yours. If you want to know more I offer a FREE consultation to all clients to answer any questions they may have or to allay any fears they may have about using hypnosis or how it works. See here for more information on hypnosis for phobias . Send me an e mail at gw@ripleyhypnotherapy.co.uk and let me know what you think. My practice is based near Derby but I see clients from right across the East Midlands.

Hypnotherapy Derby, Ripley. New Theory Of Consciousness

The whole theory of our consciousness is up in the air after doctors communicated with a man who had been in a vegatative state for a number of years. The doctors noticed the man was showing signs of awareness and after tests using an MRI scanner, they concluded he had answered 5 out of 6 questions correctly by changing his brain waves.

The simple questions such as asking his fathers name (Thomas) including trying to test the patient by giving him an incorrect answer i.e is your fathers name Brian? This just goes to show that there is still much to be learned about our states of awareness and how we operate within these states.According to the report published in the new England Journal of Medicine, not everyone with brain trauma can respond like this but this must be the news that many families of brain injured patients have been waiting for. To think that their loved ones have been listening to them whilst at their bedsides much be a mixed bag of happiness tainted with the sorrow of not being able to hear them reply.

The human brain is a fascinating thing, and we may never know its extreme complexities but science is continuing to give us at least some answers. The full article is here .For more information on states of consciousness especially regarding the relationship between the mind and the subconscious mind look at the website for Hypnotherapy Derby

Hypnotherapy Derby. More Words Of Wisdom

“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams..
...Who looks inside, awakens.”

Carl Gustav Jung

As a clinical hypnotherapist, this is a rule of life, I try and get my clients (some anyway) to think about. As the immortal Milton Erickson said, we all have the inner abilities and knowledge to sort our problems, or get ourselves back to a 'normal' life. The answers to our problems lie within us, yet without the help of a therapist, sometimes we cant see the wood for the trees. Or we may have so much stuff going on in out heads that, we cant think straight and therefore find it hard to know whats right to do.

Hypnosis can relax you to a point where after a couple of sessions, you can start to put things in order, take stock of your life and see what is best, or most important for you -to live the happiest way that you can live.Only in the trance state, can we utilise the full power of our minds and see what we need to see. We go about our day to day lives, never really searching ourselves for the answers to our problems. You may think that someone else is the cause of your problem, well if you think about it enough- you might be able to see that (where possible) you do not need to put up with this person, you are the only one who could or should be able to take responsibility for your life.

Carl Jung was and still is considered to be a great thinker, going into many different realms of society. The words above are apt, none more so than in the hypnosis profession. If you want to know more about Hypnotherapy Derby send me an e mail.

I look forward to hearing from you

Why Try Hypnotherapy ? www.ripleyhypnotherapy.co.uk

By Ripley Hypnotherapy and NLP

So what is hypnosis? Hypnosis is nothing new, what it is, is a name given to a naturally occuring phenomenon which people noticed has great benefits. It was used long ago, as far back as the sleep temples of ancient Egypt. It is just as safe as being in a day dream- ie you cant get stuck in a hypnotic trance, you cant be made to do anything against your will and there is no question of mind control- you are always fully aware and in control in a hypnosis session. The mind can achieve great things when the trance state is used to full effect. For example, we have often seen an athlete collapse after running a gruelling race, they talk about being in ‘the zone’ for a race and as soon as the race is done they come back to a sense of normality and the body might then feel the exhaustion it has put off until the end of the race and they might fall to the floor –unable to run any further. ‘The zone’ is just another state of mind the runner has put themselves in and that is just like a hypnotic state- not harmful at all –in fact quite the opposite.

People often say that there is no such thing as hypnosis, but we should look at it more in terms of it not being a question of whether hypnosis exists or not but whether or not people can realise that we are not necessarily the omnipotent beings we think we are. Whatever we call it, there is an ability within us to achieve more than we previously thought possible. The best example I can give of this is when seeing pain relief using hypnosis - this was commonplace before the invention of chemical anaesthesia.

Of course, a much more well known use of the trance state is hypnotherapy to quit smoking. The body may also be chemically addicted to nicotine, but it is the subconscious mind that can control these types of cravings. Also there is, according to the majority of my clients a feeling of something missing when they try and stop smoking, which if not correctly addressed will just lead them back to the cigarettes – usually after 2 weeks or so. Only hypnosis actively utilises the subconscious mind, which is why it so effective for smoking cessation.

Stress management is another example of where a hypnotherapy can really shine. Stress causes probably more problems for us than any other symptom experienced as human beings. Stress can manifest itself as anything from a bad back to unexplained aches or pains. Our bodies are built to experience stress as in the past it would have helped us be better huntsmen and focus more when it was needed – such as hunting prey.

What we are not designed for is to experience continual stress, such as work stress or money worries. A burst of adrenaline can have some benefits in the short term, but cortisol –the ‘stress’ hormone can cause other problems when it is not used up from the bloodstream, a feeling of burnout can leave us struggling to be coping with stress.

Hypnosis for weight loss is being used more and more by people who are fed up of diets, who always put weight back on no matter how hard they try to keep it off. I have found, that for around 65% of my clients, emotional issues can be the major stumbling block for losing weight and keeping it off. We often use our weight as ‘armour’ to protect us from the knocks that life can bring. Diet pills are no good as like most tablets, they are man made and therefore have side effects, the worst of which we will probably see in years to come when it will be too late.

Panic attacks are becoming more and more common, there are so many worries to life today that people are becoming more and more susceptible to anxiety disorders such as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Anxiety can often be a contributing factor in more serious conditions like depression, and also stress. Symptoms of anxiety can range from sleeplessness, obtrusive and repetitive thoughts, a feeling of being on edge constantly, feeling over nervous and also negative ruminating thoughts.

I have successfully used hypnosis to help clients deal with all of these conditions, hypnosis can be the thing that many people have been looking for for all or a large part of their lives. But it is not all about negativity, there are many positive uses that we can use trance states for –learning new skills quicker, helping us to relax so we can think more clearly, studying for exams, helping to conceive, the list is endless.

The list of conditions that can be treated is too big to list here but includes:
- IBS treatment, and other gut conditions
-  helping cope with dementia
- painful conditions such as fibromyalgia
- blushing
- confidence management
- phobias and fears

Hypnosis for surgery is a multi facted tool in that, it cal help to relieve some of the anxiety BEFORE an operation - this in itself can reduce pain, because we expect a certain amount of pain and discomfort about any operation we may make the actual amount of pain experienced more than it is.

Hypnosis can combat the pain during an operation as shown and also positive suggestions given in the weeks leading to an operation (about the prognosis after surgery) can also help the patient to recover much quicker than without.

The mind tells you when pain is there, so it should follow that the mind can alter the pain felt.

Do You Know A Dog With A Stick ?

Have you ever seen a dog proudly carrying a big stick it has been playing with ? The dog will carry on happy as Larry with his stick just carrying it around like a trophy. Then one day the dog has to try and get through a gate or a doorway with the stick. So what does it do? Of course dogs are very intelligent creatures, capable of showing real measurable intelligence and also emotion.

So with all this intelligence you would think it shouldnt be too hard for a dog to get through the gateway with the stick, after all there may be many gateways as it enjoys its walk. So the dog just goes up to the gateway with the big stick held horizontally in its mouth and of course the gateway isnt as wide as the stick but that doesnt stop the dog trying - oh no in fact it makes the dog just keep trying, and every time it tries the stick stops the dog from going through the gate. Again and again it tries, the horizontal stick always catching the sides of the gateway. Sometimes the dog might even hurt itself,  it will just keep banging the stick across the gateway but it still tries and tries and tries.

What the dog doesnt know is that, all it has to do instead of banging itself against the gateway, is to simply turn its head to the side a little, it doesnt take much effort or thought and then it can get through the gateway and enjoy the rest of its walk, because it might be dark soon and then there wil be no more walking for it.

FT.com / Reportage - Why sadness is good for you? Or is it ?

On the surface this report doesnt make sense, but if you think how you behave, for example when a relationship breaks up we often like to listen to sad songs, or watch weepy films. Why would we want to listen to things that make us feel more down than before? this certainly doesnt seem to have an evolutionary basis. But when you think that a large percentage of our lives is controlled subconsciously then its a little easier to understand why we behave in ways which dont make much sense on the surface.

Hypnosis Derby is the areas leading hypnotherapy practice, seeing clients from Loughborough to Hope Valley due to its great reputation. For you FREE consultation phone 07980 739817 or e mail gw@ripleyhypnotherapy.co.uk
